Celebrate National Community Health Center Week with Duffy!

August 3, 2012  |  By Elyse DeGroot, Director of Community Relations & Marketing

Next week, August 5 – August 11, is celebrated as National Community Health Center Week in all 50 states. Events ranging from health care fairs to walks and other group activities are planned to help highlight Community Health Centers as cost effective and accessible providers of health care. It's also National Health Care for the Homeless Day on Wednesday, August 8. The staff at Duffy Health Center work incredibly hard and it's great that they get a day where their work is truly appreciated. If you know one of our staffers, please give them a shout out and celebrate their good work.

Here at Duffy, we're kicking off the week and National Healthcare for the Homeless Day with two events:

  • Wednesday, August 8, 2012: A legislative breakfast co hosted with the Cape and Vineyard Community Health Center Network
  • Saturday, August 11, 2012: The first ever civilian "Stand Down-Cape Cod

The breakfast is our chance to tell local legislators about the important work we are involved with and ask them for their continued support. Plus, we get to show off our beautiful new facility and have them meet some of our staff!

The civilian "Stand Down" will take place on the grounds of Cape Cod Academy in Osterville. Originally, "Stand Down" was a military term designating that a combat unit was temporarily moved away from the fighting and back to a base area for rest and rehabilitation. A civilian "Stand Down" is more commonly seen as an opportunity to provide needed services to local vets including general health screenings, benefits assistance, dental care, Registry of MV services, and free clothing/hygiene items in a safe and welcoming environment. As you may remember, the original idea and funding for the "Stand Down" was the result of the Shelter from the Storm concert organized by high school students from across Cape Cod. Several of the students from the concert will be performing again, including Danielle Parkka from Barnstable High School who will be singing the National Anthem.

The Duffy Health Center, the Nam Vets Association Outreach Center, and Cape Cod Academy are pleased to help celebrate National Community Health Center Week and National Health Care for the Homeless Day and to be working together to address the needs of Veterans across Cape Cod. We hope you will find a way to celebrate our success too.
