Compassionate Care in a Large Package

by Dan McCullough
In 1988, Susan Duenas, a nurse working for the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, together with Doctor Arthur Bickford, a member of the medical staff of Cape Cod Hospital, and Herbert Mathewson, another doctor at the hospital started dispensing basic first aid, antibiotics, medical advice and clean, dry socks out of a closet in the NOAH homeless shelter in Hyannis. The program grew into a small everyday clinic. Early staff included nurse practitioner and staff leader Judy Best, Tom and Rick Brigham, Cindy Glista, Arlene Crosby and others. In time, the clinic moved over to Park Square near the hospital with the help of a generous donation in memory of Florence and Mary Duffy, and soon the clinic had morphed into The Duffy Health Center, a complex multi-service facility.

By Elsa H. Partan

The federal sequestration of funds will hurt health centers in the region, including the Community Health Center of Cape Cod in Mashpee and Duffy Health Center in Hyannis. Razing Camps, Raising Hopes

November 29, 2012 | The Barnstable Patriot  | By Kathleen Szmit

Task Force Helps Compulsive Hoarders

August 10, 2012 | Cape Cod Times

And then there is the Brewster woman who lives amid masses of flies, bugs and rotting food who must turn sideways to traverse the labyrinth of debris she refuses to part with.

Providing a Local Medical Home

August 6, 2012 | Cape Cod Times
When we talk about value in health care, we need to focus on the quality of care delivered to patients as well as how far each dollar goes. Today, a growing number of Cape Codders and Islanders are frustrated by having to navigate a health care system that is disorganized, confusing and increasingly unaffordable. What's missing from the health care debate is the growing body of evidence that shows we can address all of these problems by expanding access for more people to a patient-centered primary care medical home.
